Brief history of Phonics classes
Phonics is a sublexical method of teaching people to read, speak and write in the English language. Phonics has been long denied before it became part of an educational system. Today, this method is the main method of reading and comprehending new unknown words in a foreign language. Phonics classes in Singapore are focused on developing the ability to divide words in different phonemes. The English language has more phonemes than letters and this is why it is so hard for pronunciation. Phonics classes allow their students to manipulate sound-spelling in order to pronounce easily foreign words.
Phonics classes in U.S.
During the 19th century, when painting arts were very popular everyone used word “phonics” equal to the word “phonetics”. Oxford English Dictionary changed this when they published the meaning of the word — method of teaching. This happened in the early years of 20th century. People first used another method for teaching reading called — “look-say”. Teachers and parents forced their children to memorize the words in order to pronounce them faster and easier next time when they see it. One way or another in 1950 American author Rudolf Flesch published a book called “Why Johnny Can’t Read” that criticized the absence of phonics methods. During that time period in U.S. people consider that letters are the main structure of reading and pronunciation. Not long after the appearance of the idea of sound and phonics, teaching methods of reading start some very interesting disputes. Eventually, phonics was merged with letters. National Academy of Education published the whole report of recommendation how children should be taught to read. The goal was children to start to identify words through identifying letters and phonics first.
The National Reading Panel published a report that divides the ability to read to several parts — phonics for word identification, phonemic awareness, fluency, text comprehension, and vocabulary. Five parts represent the best condition of learning to read. The most important conclusion from the report was that phonics classes are the most suitable way for one child to comprehend reading easily. This was the end of disputes against phonics classes and schools like My English School have appeared.
Phonics classes in the UK
In United Kingdom phonics was accepted later than the U.S. However, UK Government defined it as a method of choice for teaching reading in UK schools. In 2010 was published a plan for training teachers to provide phonics classes.
Phonics classes in Australia and Canada
In Australia, synthetic phonics approach is part of the educational system and the results are obvious. Boys who are second grade are better readers than girls and against previous data, all students show better reading ability than before. Canada is next country which will develop phonics method in her educational system.
